WHAT TO EXPECT BEHIND THE PURPLE DOORS

LOOKING FOR THE RIGHT CHURCH?
We are thrilled that you have chosen to check HarvestDowntown out. We are a local church community committed to Christ’s mission in the world. We believe that everything we do is worship and we are therefore committed to living our lives with intentionality and purpose for Him.
Going to a new church can be intimidating and sometimes daunting, especially when you have visited several churches and can’t seem to find a church that works well for your whole family. Please don’t give up! But let me say, we are not the perfect church for you, but I hope that we are the right church for you.
To help with your experience at HarvestDowntown, or to help you decide whether to even visit or not, we have come up with some basic insights into our church that will make your time with us a worship experience rather than just a “church-shopping” experience.
CASUAL + CONTEMPORARY
Though we meet in a building that bears the echoes of the past, we are a casual and contemporary church community. We do not take ourselves very seriously, but we take God very seriously.
We encourage you to come in the clothes that will help you have a worshipful mindset. For some, this means dressing up while for others this is dressing in the most comfortable clothes they have—but we all have the responsibility to care for those around us. For instance, you may find yourself sitting next to someone who is a professional or homeless and it would be wrong to make either feel awkward.
Our service might be a bit backwards for those who have grown up in the American church. We believe that authentic, desperate worship is always in response to the Revelation of God. To this end, we have structured the worship service with ample time to respond to the message from the Bible. We offer communion every Sunday and there are no restrictions other than faith in Jesus and forgiveness of one another.
The 9:00 service ends at 10:15 and the 10:40 service ends at 12:10. We serve SwitchBack coffee at both services and yes, you are welcome to drink the coffee in the sanctuary. We also encourage you to meet someone new before or after the service. We look forward to having you as our guest as we engage in worship together, and we sincerely hope that your worship experience is one that reflects your response to God’s revelation to you.
We are an intergenerational church that is attempting to serve three to five generations. What this means for you is that we encourage our people to interact with those of another generation.
During our worship gatherings, we welcome children in our services but also provide classes for infants through fifth grade. These classes are only offered during the 10:40 service, but we hope to offer them during the 9:00 service in the near future. The nursery, toddler class, and 3-4 year-old class are available to receive your children 10 minutes before the start of the service. The pre-K, Kindergarten, and elementary classes do not begin until the kids are released during the service—and these children are brought back into the sanctuary when their class is completed.
